What digital eye strain actually is
Digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome, is not one condition. What blue light unambiguously does is signal time of day to the circadian system. What changes after forty
Presbyopia — the gradual stiffening of the lens that makes near focus harder — begins measurably in the early forties and is nearly universal by the mid-fifties. Most executives notice it first as arm-extension with a phone or as sudden intolerance for restaurant menus in dim light. Uncorrected or partially corrected presbyopia dramatically amplifies screen fatigue, because the focusing system is now working harder for the same output. Weeks one to three — fix the environment. Measure your actual screen distance and move the monitor to arm's length. Raise or lower it so the top edge sits at or just below eye level. Increase text size until you stop leaning in. Reposition to kill glare from windows and overhead lights. Match screen brightness to the room. If you are working primarily on a laptop, add an external monitor or a stand plus a separate keyboard — a laptop cannot satisfy both neck and eye geometry at once.
Weeks four to six — rebuild the blink and the break. Set a recurring twenty-minute cue and use it to look out a window for twenty to thirty seconds. Practice deliberate complete blinks — five slow full closures — at the top of every hour.
