Every few months a recovery tool breaks out of the biohacker niche and lands in the executive mainstream, trailing equal parts promise and hype. Red light therapy — the clinical term is photobiomodulation — is the current one. Clients ask me about it constantly: does it work, what does it work for, and is it worth the money and the minutes. My answer, after reading the research and watching clients use it for years, is yes with conditions. Dr. Jason Rannfeldt does not recommend tools on enthusiasm; this article is the honest version — where the evidence is genuinely strong, where it is thin, and the exact protocol I give executives who want the benefits without turning their bathroom into a laboratory.

Red light therapy earns its place in that second tier. It is not a substitute for the basics. It is a legitimate amplifier, and for certain goals it is one of the best-supported devices you can buy.
What red light therapy actually is
Photobiomodulation uses specific wavelengths of red light (roughly 630 to 670 nanometers) and near-infrared light (roughly 810 to 850 nanometers) delivered at meaningful intensity to the skin. The red wavelengths are absorbed in the skin's upper layers; the near-infrared penetrates deeper, reaching muscle and connective tissue. The proposed mechanism is surprisingly well-grounded in cell biology: these wavelengths are absorbed by an enzyme inside your mitochondria — cytochrome c oxidase — which improves the efficiency of cellular energy production and triggers downstream signaling involved in repair and inflammation control.

Where the evidence is strong
Skin health. This is the most robust category by a wide margin. Controlled trials show red light improves collagen density, skin elasticity, and the appearance of fine lines over eight to twelve weeks of consistent use. For executives this sounds cosmetic until you remember that skin is also your largest inflammatory organ — the same pathways that improve appearance reflect real changes in tissue health, and the gut-skin axis I covered in The Gut-Brain Connection runs both directions.
Muscle recovery and soreness. Meta-analyses of photobiomodulation in athletes show reduced delayed-onset muscle soreness and faster recovery of strength when light is applied around training — the evidence is strongest when the session happens before or shortly after the workout rather than hours later. For clients rebuilding a training base after forty — the population in Strength Training After 40 — less soreness means better consistency, and consistency is the variable that actually determines results.
Joint pain and inflammation. Multiple trials show meaningful reductions in pain for knee osteoarthritis and tendinopathies with near-infrared protocols. Where the evidence is promising but thinner
Sleep. A handful of studies — including one frequently cited trial in athletes — show improved sleep quality and melatonin levels with evening red light exposure. Mechanistically it makes sense: red light does not suppress melatonin the way blue-rich evening light does, and the cellular effects may support the repair processes that run during sleep. But the study count is small. My practical position: red light in the evening is at worst harmless and plausibly helpful, which is more than I can say for the tablet most executives stare at until midnight. Cognition and brain health. Early research on near-infrared applied to the head shows interesting signal for memory and traumatic brain injury recovery, but this is genuinely frontier science. Fat loss and metabolism. This is where the marketing most outruns the data. You will see claims that red light 'melts fat.' The honest summary: there is preliminary evidence of effects on fat cells, but nothing that justifies buying a panel for weight loss. Metabolic outcomes come from the work in Metabolic Health and Metabolic Flexibility — food, movement, muscle, and sleep. Anyone selling you light as a shortcut around that is selling.
The executive protocol I actually recommend
For clients who want to add photobiomodulation, here is the structure that fits a real calendar. Frequency: four to six sessions per week — consistency matters far more than session length, exactly like every other intervention in this series. Duration: ten to fifteen minutes per session at the distance your device's manufacturer specifies for its irradiance; closer and longer is not better, and the dose-response curve for light is real and inverted at the extremes. Timing: attach it to an existing anchor. Target areas: for recovery goals, the trained muscle groups and any chronically irritated joints. For skin goals, face and neck. Eye protection per the device guidelines — near-infrared is invisible, and invisible does not mean harmless to retinas. And set a review point: eight to twelve weeks, with the same before-and-after discipline I apply to every protocol — track the soreness, the skin, the sleep score against the baseline metrics in Recovery Metrics That Matter. If nothing has moved by week twelve, you have your answer and your money stays in your pocket next time.
Where it ranks among recovery tools
Executives love a hierarchy, so here is mine. I have never seen a panel compensate for five hours of sleep and a diet of airport food — and I say that as someone who recommends the tool. The bottom line
Red light therapy is one of the rare recovery devices where the honest evidence summary is 'yes, for specific things' rather than 'probably nothing' or 'miracle.' Strong for skin and muscle recovery, reasonable for joint pain, plausible for sleep, unsupported as a metabolic shortcut. Ten minutes, five days a week, anchored to a routine you already have, reviewed against your own data at twelve weeks. That is the whole protocol.
